I was sentenced as a child-to be without my mother.† This quotation is part of a story of a young woman’s struggle with her mother being in prison. Separation from children is an issue that many female prisoners face. However, it’s not just the mothers who will suffer; we must also consider the children of these women. The children are often left to deal with many emotions ranging from anxiety to feelings of abandonment. There are programs that have been introduced into the justice system that provide parenting and personal development classes to inmates to help them better connect with their families. The Girl Scouts Beyond Bars Program works to reduce reunification issues upon release and ease the stress of separation by supporting relationships between incarcerated mothers and their children. The program makes visitation arrangements and conducts activities for the mothers and children to do together. Since most female prison facilities are in remote areas of the state, the program will also provide transportation to the children. Homelessness, a ubiquitous problem in the world, is a murky road to ultimate despair. Performing at Folies Bergà ¨re music hall, in a set called La Folie du Jour, Baker danced topless, wearing a skirt made of bananas. For her efforts as a civil rights activist, the NAACP named May 20th â€Å"Josephine Baker Day.† Bakers Death On April 12, 1975, Baker died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
